Take Some ‘You’ Time

It’s so easy to get carried away with all of the jobs and endless tasks that we have to do, that it can be difficult to remember to save some time for yourself as well.

My partner and I are self employed, both trying to grow separate businesses, and it can be extremely difficult for us to switch off.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have been trying to take some time for ourselves, and I can’t tell you how good it feels.

Have Some ‘You’ Time

It’s so easy for me to tell you to take some time off, but I know it’s hard in practice. So here are some tips to help you along the way 😀

Go Outside

When it all gets too much, take yourself out of the situation. If I’ve been typing for too long, or feeling frustrated that my workouts, or filming, or scheduling isn’t going to plan, then I take a walk. It doesn’t have to be long, and just a few minutes away will help you clear your head and you’ll feel refreshed.

Plan Realistically

One thing we are really bad for, is trying to cram too much into the day. We’ll have a big list of things (all jobs, rather than fun things) that we think will take us half an hour, but in reality take us a couple of hours. It gets super frustrating when you can’t get through your to-do list, and makes you try to rush through things.

So now we only plan to do things we know we can fit into the day, and anything else is a bonus.

Cut Yourself Some Slack

This one goes hand in hand with the point above. Again, it’s easy to say, but try not to punish yourself when things go wrong. You know you will power through because you have to, and then you can be proud.

I’ll definitely have days when my workouts and training won’t go to plan, or my days off end up being accidental duvet days, but what’s done is done. Focus on the positive and don’t punish yourself.

Turn That Phone Off!

One of the best things I’ve done for myself, is using airplane mode on my phone, multiple times a day. I always turn my phone off a little while before I teach, and when I get home of an evening and know that the work for the day is done.

It’s so nice not to have to scroll endlessly through social media, as I tend to do without realising. Don’t get me wrong, I use social media all of the time, but when it gets to 10pm, it’s time to switch off. To put this in context, I usually go to bed at about midnight, so I have 2 hours of phone free time.

It’s hard at first, but feels amazing when you do it. I was surprised to see how many times my hand went to pick up the phone without having a reason to.

Plan Something For You

So this is our most important point. I figure that there’s no point working super hard if you can’t look after yourself. ‘You’ time is so important – it will chill you out, make you feel amazing, let you clear your mind, and prepare you for anything the day has to throw at you.

So while you’re reading this, think about what makes you happy, and what chills you out.

If there’s a course, or training session or place that you’ve wanted to go for ages, book it now. But actually right now!

Some of my favourite activities are Go Ape, Trampoline, training for myself, and going to the beach with the puppy. These tend to be one offs (other than training!) rather than every week things. Easier things to achieve that make me feel good, are having a bath (I’m a shower girl), painting my nails (I teach in bare feet), reading my books, sewing and baking.

Find something that works for you, and make sure that you plan something for you to do for yourself.

We take care of the family, house, bills, and money without fail, but we need to look after ourselves as well. So what are you waiting for? Go and take some ‘you’ time 😀
